Need your opinions please…

Ok – I need your opinions. Be totally honest.. it’s not too late.

I’ve made 3 setting blocks so far and I am using the same cream fabric that I sent each of you for the blocks – along with the deep red version. But now as I see them together – I’m worried that the red is too dark and over powering.

I didn’t use the red anywhere in any of the stars. And I thought it would help to pull the reds out of the stars.

Do you think it will look ok all together and the stars will all POP ? Or should I opt for a more muted fabric?

What are your thoughts? Talk to me.

Just from that pic, it looks like the setting blocks take the attention away from the stars. The red is very dark. I would probably try a softer color to keep the focus on the stars, maybe the pink that is shown on the top right star??

I too would probably go for something more muted- maybe tone on tone dark dusty pink?

I think it looks beautiful. However, the border is the dominant feature with this red, and the stars look secondary. I agree that if you want the stars to pop, you should use something more neutral (like a light brown/tan similar to the darker shade in the background fabric) or lighter (like a salmon/pink). If you do, I think the reds in the star fabrics will pop more, as will the stars themselves. Do you know where this quilt is going to go? It’s context might help you decide. All in all, this is an absolutely beautiful project.

I would agree that the red kind of overpowers the stars. Sorry. I know that I hate redoing stuff, but better now than when you are totally done. Oh, and I hadn’t received my fabric before we left to visit family for Christmas. I’m assuming that it is waiting for me at home. I’ll get it done probably that first week of the new year.

i agree with the others- it does look like the setting blocks are overpowering the stars. if your goal is to make the stars pop, then a softer color instead of the red would probably work really well. maybe the pink that you sent for my block? i think that would look really nice. if you want to pull the red in somehow, maybe you could add a double border once all of the blocks are finished- a thin red one and a thick cream one. i recently did a similar border on a quilt and i really like the results.

I don’t know~I always have to look at the whole thing~the red does seem to dominate, but dependent on the other blocks it may work. If you’re okay with reworking your blocks, I’d probably use the pink~the soft, subtle difference from the creme may allow the stars to “shine” a bit more. FYI, I used the red for the “dark” in the block you’ve sent me. ~Dorrie
